Top tips to working on your mindset when beginning your fitness journey
Changing your mindset is the key to your success and this post blog offer my top tips on how you can start working on yours.
1. Firstly, no more excuses
Excuses will run the whole show if you let them. You have a 9 to whenever job so don’t have time to exercise? You’re a parent to 3 kids so you don’t have time to dedicate to yourself? You don’t know the first thing about nutrition and diet, so why start now?
All it takes to overcome these so-called “obstacles” is to commit to positive change in your life. You can decide that these obstacles are in fact just self-doubt masquerading as excuses and make a conscious decision to override them.
2. Realise that everyone starts at the bottom
You don’t need to be the best. The reality is that no one starts at the top – we all begin at the bottom and it’s exactly where you’re supposed to be when beginning your fitness journey. View this as exciting rather than daunting and imagine where you could be 6 months from now. Where you’re heading is far more important than where you are today.
3. Do the action, and the confidence will follow
Don’t listen to the voice in your head that tells you you’re going to fail before you even begin. Just start taking the steps and doing the work. Getting it done, no matter how imperfect, is what will kill the doubt and make space for this amazing thing called confidence. Confidence is a practice; you don’t just have it, you put in the work and just like a muscle it grows stronger. Confidence is built and not born, when you work hard towards something and do your best to master it, you feel proud and empowered and no one can ever take that from you. Real, rooted, unshakeable confidence doesn’t come from nothing, you have to create it.
4. Stop looking for the secret to success
No matter who you are or how much money you may have, the real results in a body transformation are only ever achieved through the hard work you put in. The secret is that there is no secret. Hard work, reaps rewards.
5. Understand that you only need yourself
Complex supplements that you can’t even pronounce, special shoes, fancy headphones and workout gear. You don’t need any of this. All you need is time, consistency, dedication, commitment and patience. There is no faster track or supplement to get you where you want to be. You just need yourself and the willingness to make a change.
6. Don’t look for a quick result
More often than not I hear people say their goal is that they want to lose as much weight as fast as possible. This is the way most people approach changing their body, but it’s not the right way. Start focusing on your health as holistic and thinking long term. One thing that we all have in common is that we are getting older, so think about creating habits that will benefit you for years to come. Every other side effect, including weight loss and aesthetics, will follow and you’ll be left with a healthier lifestyle overall.
7. Don’t neglect your mind
Physical strength and mental strength are one and the same. You need a healthy mind in order to work on your healthy body. Paying attention to your mental space and working on your mental resilience is as important as working out.
8. Stop caring about what others think
It’s easier said than done. But no one lives your life and walks in your shoes. Do your thing and do your best at it, love yourself like it’s your job and be kind to everyone you meet … because they’re probably worrying about what you think of them too.
9. Don’t self-sabotage
Pay attention to and redirect the negative self-talk. Be mindful of the urge to self-sabotage and start changing the narrative. You have to become your own number one supporter and biggest fan 24/7/365. Nobody else is going to do that for you.
